The celebration of Philadelphia’s two Local Legends
Sonia Sanchez and James Dupree
The North Central Phila CDC – RCO team along with our collaborators (listed below) have joined forces to revitalize Philadelphia’s the Garden and Legacy of two World Renowned Living Legends “Poetess Sonia Sanchez and Mural Artist James Dupree .”
If the legends are present at the start of our activities they will be honored by a presentation awarded by our two political representatives, the Honorable State Senator Sharif Street and Philadelphia Council President Darrell Clarke.
The Sonia Sanchez Poetry Contest
The event will take place on Sat. Aug 3rd during the “Philadelphia Free Streets” at Broad and Diamond Streets. This event will be a series of contest that will ask artist of different art forms to capture the essence of a chosen Poem of Sonia Sanchez. There will be five categories Art, Music, Culinary Arts, Dance, and Poetry.
People walking by will judge the artist that captures the essence of the Poem the best by completing an index card and placing it on the chosen contest’s Voting Board.
Sonia’s Renaissance Garden Tours
Visitors will be spelled bound by The magnificent mural of James Dupree and intoxicated by the floral abundance of the garden at the corner of Carlisle and Diamond Streets.
There will be voting boards posted outside of the garden. There will be a display of two new Garden Designs for the 2020 Sonia Sanchez Renaissance Garden/Mural by James Dupree. Visitors will then able to vote on the 2020 Garden of their choice.
Hearty Gardeners seeking a challenge can Register to assist to work with us on the winning garden selection.
Before leaving visitors can grab a delicious Barbecue hot dog or barbeque Carrot dog along with a cold water Ice as they continue to their next designation on the North Central Phila Free Streets Rail Ticket.
